Description

The 2020 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence is an international campaign that takes place between November 25 (the International Day against Violence against Women and Girls) and December 10 (International Human Rights Day) in order to symbolically link violence against women and human rights and to emphasize that violence against women and girls is a violation of human rights.

This year in Zamfara State Series of event  take place simultaneously inside the State and also in the Reach intervention LGAs Talata Mafara and Kaura Namoda reflectively  while In Talata Mafara LGA during this Year 2020 16 Days Campaign SCI and SMACI Conducted the following activities

•Advocacy

•Street Mach /Orange the world

•Mosque Sermons /GBV awareness sessions;

•Meeting with Community Leaders Families and GBV survivor

Targeting different groups, including women, adolescent girls, men, boys, families, Security agencies Religious and traditional leader in the LGA, Communities, mosques, streets, and other public and open spaces. With focused on raising awareness about GBV, particularly sexual violence, highlighting availability of services for survivors, and encouraging Community Leaders men and boys to assume more responsibility by standing against GBV. The objective of the campaign is:

  • To provide a forum to highlight available services, including Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH), and existing referral pathways, and to encourage women and adolescent girls to access these services.
  • To give women and adolescent girls an opportunity to raise their voice at all levels of the community through their direct participation in the campaign activities.
  • To ensure mass mobilization of all communities to promote collective responsibility in the fight to eradicate GBV.
  • To increase awareness on the negative impact of sexual violence on women and adolescent girls as well as society as a whole.

                                                            

Methodology/activity details 

On 23rd November 2020 a meeting was held at office for the planning of celebration of “International 16 Days of Activism’’ 2020. All the program staffs were present in the meeting and we get to understand that the celebration can take place from 25th November to 10st of December every year. On 24th November 2020 advocacy visit was conducted together with Technical Working Group (TWG) to stakeholder Of Talata Mafara LGA. All the policy maker and decision maker were visited during the advocacy for the purpose of upcoming event, the stakeholder visited include Emir of Talata Mafara, LGA chairman, Director primary health care od Talata Mafara, senior district head of Talata Mafara, DPO of Talata Mafara police station, CDO of Civil defences office were all of them received a brief introduction of 16 days activism and which each and every one of them gave their buy in idea on how the will be celebrated.

On 8th December 2020 campaign was conducted on Gender-Based Violence at Kagara ward in order to continuing to call for the ratification of the people to end all forms of GBV in private and public spaces in the community and across the 11 ward at large


On 9th December 2020 rally was conducted together with TWG member, facilitators, supervisors, traditional singers as well as adolescents, The rally started immediately after the gathering activities has taking place at Galadima house, Starting from Galadima  where some adolescent was selected to make bicycle rally with posters and the remaining adolescent were divided into two group in other to make thing easier and to use the formula of division of labour, All the groups trek going around the Talata Mafara metropolis and some strategic places among which include: Central police station, Local Government secretariat, Civil defence Head Office, and Emirs palace, together with TWG and program staff.


At Emirs place the Emir appreciate the effort of Save the Children International/ Save mother and Children Initiative with their activities, especially that of VYA which give children ability to make their own decision, as it was said “Children are the leaders of tomorrow”, He also talk about the way and manners staffs of save mothers and children initiative approach him and his cabinet, as such the Emir give some exorbitant advice to the Adolescents, and also advice the Facilitator to be honest and use patient and wisdom in dealing with adolescents.

The day was celebrated by using Covid19 guidelines and protocols as priority to prevent the spread of the disease to the adolescents, facilitators and project staffs and all participants wear facemask during celebration. Closing prayers was made by IMAM and from Emirs palace we share refreshments to the participant, adolescents and facilitators.

Achievements

  • Participations of security agency in the Campaign (Police and Civil defence)
  • Community leaders take responsibility in reporting and dealing with SGBV issues in their communities to ensure the Survivors get Justice   
  • Meaningful feedbacks from Emir, LGA chairman and senior district head of Talata Mafara LGA on how to continue creating awareness on implication of GBSV among the society and ensure that the perpetrators’ are being punished
  • Successfully conveyed the activities and rally on the 16 days of activism with All the government guideline on Covid19 procedures in place during the celebration.
  • Reach 384 people adult Men and Women adolescents boys and Girls with awareness on the negative impact of sexual violence on women and adolescent girls as well as society as a whole.
